This is a 5 star recipe. We all really enjoyed this one and said we’d have this again any time. It was quick and easy but also very tasty. The ingredients are pretty easy to find so anyone can try it.
The Ingredients
- 1lb or so of new potatoes
- 20g butter
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, crushed
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard seeds
- 2 teaspoons garam masala
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon chilli powder
- ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric
- 400g can chopped/crushed tomatoes
The Recipe
- Boil the potatoes(or microwave them) until just tender.
- Heat the butter in a deep pan and cook the onion and garlic until the onion is translucent and soft.
- Stir in the mustard seeds, garam masala, coriander, cumin, chilli powder, and turmeric.
- Once the spices have blended nicely add the tomatoes and cook for a couple of minutes until the sauce begins to thicken.
- Add the potatoes and continue cooking until they are heated through and coated with the sauce.
- Serve with a mild curry and some plain rice.
Thoughts and Observations
I’m tempted to try some variations on this. We could try fresh chilli instead of dried chilli powder , fresh coriander instead of dried, perhaps even cooking the onions until they start to burn and then using the tomatoes to deglaze the pan.

These are absoloutely gorgeous. I have made my own main course out of these by simply adding 500 grams of tiger prawns, add them in just before adding the spices to get them coated, gorgeous! replacing the chilli powder with four green chopped and two whole for a nice spicey main course. Thanks!

I wouldn't have thought about converting it to a main dish but I may just try it next time I get some large prawns.
